Afric Pepperbird is among a handful of groundbreaking Jan Garbarek dates from the early 70s that kick any false accusations of “smooth” hard to the curb. The Norwegian saxophonist pumps musical iron with guitarist Terje Rypdal, bassist Arild Andersen, and drummer Jon Christensen with as much gusto as sensitivity toward the little things. While tender soil abounds, the crop it yields is maximally flavorful. Whether squeezing his way through the rhythm section’s tornado in “Blow Away Zone” or baring his teeth in “Beast Of Kommodo,” Garbarek unleashes some gut-wrenching solos for our consideration. Worth your attention.
