Alongside Dublin’s Lankum, Cavan’s Lisa O’Neill is part of a wave of Irish artists reanimating traditional folk music into something deeply in tune with the terrors of modern times. O’Neill’s fifth album at times feels like she’s reciting an ancient incantation as stories and sorrows of the past are brought back to life and led bleeding into the present; O’Neill bringing together the old world and the new in an ever relevant encapsulation of the human condition. That O’Neill was chosen to sing “Fairytale of New York” at Shane MacGowan’s funeral recently is a clear indicator of her place in Ireland’s musical lineage.
