Baroque Marimba

Released

Baroque music on the marimba may seem, at first blush, like a contradiction in terms: obviously, no composer of the baroque period wrote with the marimba in mind. But baroque composers often wrote with no specific instrument in mind — sonatas may have been written with the expectation that they could be played on the oboe or the violin or the flute, and concertos for one instrument were often repurposed for one or more others. And the thing is, the music of Bach (in particular) sounds amazing on the marimba. This program is mostly Bach, and is something of a revelation.
