For their second album, as well as their last with original lead vocalist David Baker, Mercury Rev didn’t quite redo Yerself Is Steam, though there were a couple of clear nods back to the earlier album at points. But things were a little less sounding like they were all going to fall apart and simultaneously explode, for all that they were still wandering roads on maps that apparently nobody else had. Whether it’s the engaging semi lounge swing of “Boys Peel Out” or the stately rock epic of sorts “Meth of a Rockette’s Kick” or more besides, it’s a compelling strangeness.
