While there isn’t exactly a shortage of bands mining ‘90s alt-rock for inspiration, what sets Wisconsin’s Disq apart is just how good they are at it. Pavement, Weezer and The Lemonheads are just some of the acts thumbed to bring together their second album, Collector, but it’s a record that easily transcends its touchstones. The disgruntled ennui of opener “Daily Routine” comes across like Parquet Courts covering The Beatles, and it’s the balance of skewed, slacker rock noise and deft melodic sweetness that makes the album such a satisfying listen. “I’m Really Trying” delivers a crackling jolt of New Wave that Elvis Costello And The Attractions would have been pleased with, while “D19” is a swooning, lovelorn ode to singer Isaac deBroux-Slone’s favourite microphone. Really though, there’s not a duff moment on it.
