At the punitive peak of Brazil’s military junta, rising international guitarist/ composer Egberto Gismonti faced a prohibitive fee put on him and his bandmates’ travel to Oslo to record his first album for the ECM label. En route to record it solo, he encountered fellow countryman Vasconelos and explained the album concept to him as “two boys wandering through a dense, humid forest, full of insects and animals.” The eloquent and understated Dança Das Cabeças executed that vision to perfection, leading a long association with ECM for both Gismonti and Vasconcelos, the latter becoming a secret weapon for that roster.
