The Weeknd’s fifth studio album has something like a billion spins on Spotify, making it as close to a cultural phenomenon as you get in this fractured future. And it deserves it! Basically a run through a really killer 80s FM radio playlist, it’s a canny update of electro pop, Italo disco, R&B balladry, and Thriller-style crowdpleasers filtered through modern synthwave production. Which wouldn’t mean anything, of course, if songs like “Take My Breath” and “Sacrifice” weren’t so immaculately crafted. But they are.
