Discøuraged Ønes

Metal mixed with shoegaze is a pretty big thing now (thanks, Deafheaven!) but depressive Swedes Katatonia were one of the first to really start incorporating its loveless melodies into their sound – drummer/vocalist Jonas Renkse even sports a Slowdive T-shirt in the liner notes. Formally more of a death-doom collective, on Discøuraged Ønes they dispensed with the Gothic growling and realize they could just as easily summon a miasma of despair with undulating feedback and Renkse’s downer droning. The guitars are still heavy but the mood hangs heavier.
