The Roots’ first album with national distribution, Do You Want More?!!!??! was most fans‘ introduction to this Philly crew. Rap artists had performed with live bands since hip-hop’s earliest days but The Roots became the premier group to do so by in pairing a gifted MC, Black Thought, with equally talented musicians, lead by drummer ?uestlove. Singles like “Proceed” and “Distortion to Static” drew from the best traditions of jazz-influenced hip-hop, with extra emphasis on the “jazz” component.
