Dog With a Rope is the second tropical dub album from Quantic, an amalgamation of musical traditions that sprouted from the same West African roots, Latin styles like Cumbia and rumba and Jamaican rock steady, reggae and dub. Columbian and Cuban musical instrumentation and arrangement adorn heavy-weight dub rhythm sections, the laid-back rocksteady pace and skank sitting wonderfully with the seductive Latin cross-rhythms and delightfully jubilant horn parts.Dog With A Rope is self-consciously retro and nostalgic, sounding every bit as vintage as the dusty old vinyl 45s that inspired it, but it’s a revival that through virtue of its multiple musical blendings manages to sound simultaneously familiar yet fresh.
