Dvorák: Symphony No. 9 “From the New World”; Carnival Overture; Slavonic Dances Nos. 1 & 3

The “New World” Symphony’s melodies and vistas were a good fit for Bernstein and his ’62 New York Philharmonic. The first twenty seconds of the third movement are where you really hear their touch: a blistering tempo, confrontational accents; tight ensemble playing — the whole thing is electric and alive. The rowdy performance of the Carnival Overture is another scorcher.
