East of the Sun

Released

Recorded across 1993 and 1994, and originally released on cassette, East Of The Sun was one of Andrew Chalk’s first ‘solo’ outings, after recording as Ferial Confine in the 1980s. Around the time of East Of The Sun, he was also collaborating with Darren Tate as Ora, and you can hear echoes of their subdued, lowercase improvisations in its two lengthy tracks. “Winter Arc” is deep and subterranean, a seasonal chill whistling through its bare bones; something about it recalls the evocations of arctic tundra that populate Thomas Köner’s early albums. “High Water” is similarly understated; following its logic is like watching smoke trails winding across a sunset sky.
