Vijay Iyer turned heads (and ears) when his name started headlining ECM albums, but this fifth leader date for the label is the cream of the crop (though 2021’s Uneasy might have something to say about that). Leading a sextet of incredible prowess, he guides us through ten engaging tracks, each a lifetime of energy compressed into minutes. Come for the roster, which includes drummer Tyshawn Sorey, bassist Stephan Crump, and other Downtown luminaries; stay for the slick writing and execution of “Into Action” and “Good On The Ground,” both standout originals. A prime example of freedom within parameters.
