Flying Saucer Attack

Released

The debut, self-titled album by Flying Saucer Attack sets out their stall clearly – shy folk-pop songs buried under mountains of guitar noise, interwoven with expansive ambient/drone pieces. The way they did it, though, was relatively unique for its time; or, perhaps more accurately, their reach was much broader than precursors, which gave new listeners the frisson of the new. Dave Pearce’s mumble-drunk voice, light and airy, was the perfect foil to the distortion-drenched melodies; here, finally, was the group that forged the link between the pre-shoegaze guitar experimentation of A R Kane and My Bloody Valentine, the folk songwriting of Bert Jansch and Roy Harper, and the cosmic hypnotism of Can and Popol Vuh.
