2000’s Forevernevermore from Kenny Dixon Jr. was another collection of his 12” deep house and techno releases gathered together to create a full-length album. Tracks like the gnarly yet slick Set Up — which sounds like an overripe classic period Mr Fingers production — and the wonderfully muffled [Logo] both lean more towards the classic Detroit techno sound: tense, aquatically deep, potent and austere. The rest of the album is more disco focused, with tracks patched together from gauzy, overdriven sampled loops set to crunchy KDJ house beats. Dixon continues to develop his sonic collage approach, where the edges of each piece of audio are discernible and the method of construction is revealed and revelled in as a sonic quality rather than a technique to be cleaned up. Linked to the past and pushing into the future, Forevernevermore is full of life and history and laden with feeling.
