Maybe it was just a rethink, maybe it was the birth of Elizabeth Fraser and Robin Guthrie’s daughter, maybe it was something else, but the Cocteaus entered the 1990s maybe wanting to prove something, and with the glorious Heaven or Las Vegas they did just that. Even as shoegaze groups that owed a partial sonic debt to them started to appear everywhere, the Cocteaus created their most focused, instantly accessible album yet, a sparkling, never suffocating showcase for their vivid sound that equalled Treasure for its impact.
