Heavy Ghost

Released

One of those perfect album titles that tells you everything you’re in for before you press play. Heavy Ghost can hit you as either deeply creepy or terrifyingly romantic, depending on what you bring to it, but the common thread between those tones is Stith’s gorgeous, breathy voice, often layered upon itself over clanking, clapping, scissors and staplers, and hollowed out piano that puts you deep in the guts of the hammers. “Creekmouth” lumbers about while rubbery bass highlights “a thousand people cling to bottles, to powdered babies, to leather bibles.” Tracks that are even softer, like “Thanksgiving Moon” and “Pigs,” have a lonely Leonard Cohen swagger behind ghostly horns and skittering guitar. Dig deep, then deeper.
