Heavy Heavy

Since their 2014 Mercury Prize winning debut album, Edinburgh’s Young Fathers have glorified in being impossible to categorise or pigeonhole. Their fourth LP is dense collage of sounds and words but for all Heavy Heavy’s at times opaque shades and internal contradictions, it’s a record that shakes with a life-affirming power. Taking in the joyous clatter of opener “Rice,” “I Saw”’s electro-glam battle cry, the frantic cut and pasting of “Shoot Me Down” and the epic, top of the mountain spiritual “Tell Somebody,” it forged its own utterly unique musical lexicon to dizzying effect.
