Through the nineties, Mixmaster Morris made several albums and EPs as The Irresistible Force for keystone UK labels Ninja Tune and Rising High. They had a lot of the ambient ripple that he was perhaps best known for, but also an extraordinary amount of trip-hoppy, even jazzy groove — and it’s to that he returned in 2017 for his first album in 19 years. Made with Killing Joke bassist, Orb founder member and superproducer Youth in his Spanish studio Space Mountain, it has obvious chillout signifiers — gentle synth repetitions and space mission voiceover samples — but it also has complex soul chord structures and gorgeously understated groove to the real instrument playing.
