Kris Kristofferson is one of those songwriter’s songwriters — your favorite folks’ favorite folks, so to speak. His 1970 debut (reissued in 1971 as “Me and Bobby McGee” after Janis Joplin had a runaway hit with the song) remains radically progressive with “Blame It On The Stones” and “The Law Is For Protection Of The People” taking sharp aim at corrupt cops and hypocritical parents. But the real treasures are “To Beat The Devil” and “Sunday Morning Coming Down,” two gorgeous tributes to the act of picking yourself up after a period of down-and-out. While others have had success with covers it’s always worth seeking out the doomed smile behind the words in the first place. A woozy classic.
