Parallel play is what New Long Leg sounds like; vocalist Florence Shaw recites a laundry list of observations while her three friends play rock alongside her, in the same space, but not necessarily with her. “Her Hippo” lays out a bad marriage in the lightest of terms: “The house is just twelve years old, soft landscaping in the garden / An electrician stuck his finger in the plughole and shouted “Yaba!” / Her hippo / Everyday he’s a dick.” The band gets revved up, often a bit like the Banshees, but Shaw inverts the Siouxsie bit and never, ever shouts, which just draws you closer to her words.
