Saxophonist Wayne Shorter brought in three of John Coltrane’s sidemen — pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Reggie Workman, and drummer Elvin Jones — as well as his bandmate in Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, trumpeter Lee Morgan, for his first Blue Note album as a leader. The compositions are immediately recognizable as Shorter’s, because even when they’re based on standard forms (the blues, mostly) there’s always a sense of distance, like he’s talking to you but his eyes are fixed on the horizon, or something just on the other side of the wall.
