That Tim Hecker could start an album with a piece called “Monotony” seems like its own joke about some perceptions of electronic music still; that the piece moves from a core loop into a doom-heavy feeling of an ominous presence approaching something else. 2023’s No Highs found the composer touching on suggestive moods with song titles such as “Winter Cop,” “Sense Suppression” and “Anxiety.” That a slow pulsing, melancholic flow called “Total Garbage” could be followed by a buzzing, swirling and crackling one called “Lotus Light” seems very apt.
