Sometimes the best way to keep tradition alive is to shake it up. This is the case with the Thracian band Evritiki Zygia, who for years were hardcore traditionalists who played local fairs in Evros, Greece. Although the band did some fundamental conservation work (at one point they were the only ones playing traditional Thracian music), their turning point came when producer Adamantios Kafetzis swapped the accordion for an electric organ, and added a Moog to the traditional kaval, lyre, and davul. The result is a feverish, trance-inducing sound that honors ancient traditions while bringing them firmly to the present.
