The explosive bait-and-switch of “Dream Lover” could have you believe that you’re in for another big, anthemic collection of austere indie rock. Then you remember you’re listening to a Destroyer album and you know nothing is ever that simple. The cocktail-lounge-at-2AM tinged Poison Season is a perfect heel turn from the relatively approachable krautrock and hazy electronica of Kaputt, but Dan Bejar’s wit and knack for wringing sticky bitterness out of thin air keeps things from getting too, oh what’s a good word, “sophisticated”? “Times Square” and its bookended prologue and epilogue numbers strut through old New York archetypes with a swaggering frown, and numbers like “Archer on The Beach” (previously released as a collaboration with Tim Hecker) and “Forces From Above” pump dark dances as if the disco and the chamber pit are fighting to the death.
