A student of the great Jacob’s Vaet, Jacob Regnart was among the last generation of the Franco-Flemish school of polyphonic composers, a contemporary of Giaches de Wert and Philippe Rogier, among others. He was a prolific composer of both sacred and secular song; his parody Mass on the ancient German Easter hymn “Christ its erstanden” is one of his most affecting liturgical works, and is paired here with his Missa freu dich, du werthe Christenheit; the program is sung by Cinquecento, a small all-male vocal ensemble from Vienna with an unexpectedly rich sound.
