The combination of jazz organ wunderkind Joey DeFrancesco and country-rockabilly-blues Telecaster slinger Danny Gatton might not seem like an obvious one on the surface. But Gatton had been playing jazz since his childhood, and DeFrancesco (like most jazz organists) was deeply steeped in funk and soul, so it was actually a match made in heaven. Both were technical wizards, but even at its most fiery their playing is always both tasty and tasteful. And check out that version of Thelonious Monk’s “Well You Needn’t”! Sadly, they both left us before they could do it again.
