One of those albums that could only have become a hit at the exact time it came out, Primus’s major-label debut still confounds. A prog-worshiping bassist/singer, death metal guitarist, and ska drummer combined forces to somehow create a band that appealed to all those audiences without being any of those things. Les Claypool’s bass bursts sound like Tony Levin, Bootsy Collins, and Geddy Lee in a Three Stooges slap fight as he recites bizarre slice of life stories too demented not to be true. Its insanity is infectious.
