Slow Drag

Released

A New Perspective was a bold fusion of jazz with gospel choir, but Byrd would continue to dynamically utilize vocals throughout his long career, oft-times in idiosyncratic new ways. Slow Drag may have been the first jazz album that drew on another aspect of nightlife, the comedic monologue between lounge acts. Led by a slinky Cedar Walton piano line and a slow, smoldering groove that’s in no hurry to leave the joint, drummer Billy Higgins lays down a “yo mama” routine and some hip patter.
