Sophie Allison went and made the Nineties record that we need. Producer Dan Lopatin let Allison stay in her main lane, a quiet dramatic place, much more in line with Tori Amos and Nine Inch Nails than Liz Phair, the antecedent she shares some formal qualities with. This is a moody-ass rock album! The ambitions and sweep here (as well as top dollar drumming and chunky shoegaze moments) make for a kind of pop album that many have stopped swinging for.
