Spacing Out

Released

As one-act careers go, this takes some beating. The Invaders were a group of part time musicians in Bermuda, who in 1967 recorded a surprise hit and had to follow it up. The album that finally emerged in 1970 – though they split soon after its release – is a funk materpiece, charting a line between the raw simplicity of The Meters and the lightness of touch of Curtis Mayfield. Culminating in a flute-tooting, good-times take on the Isley Brothers’s “It’s Your Thing Part 2,” there isn’t a weak track on here.
