David Bowie’s 1993 soundtrack to the BBC miniseries based on the Hanif Kureishi novel about growing up in late 1970s London is in many ways his lost album, not receiving an initial American release and barely being available for many years after it. But Bowie himself credited it as a favorite, rightly so: much more so than that year’s Black Tie White Noise, it found him in a more experimental, free associative mode, putting into initial play techniques and approaches he would soon use on 1. Outside, down to an initial version of “Strangers When We Meet.”
