In 1970, Joe Henderson guested on Alice Coltrane’s Ptah, The El Daoud; three years later, they reunited for this spiritual fusion date, joined by violinist Michael White, bassist Charlie Haden, drummer Leon “Ndugu” Chancler, and a couple of percussionists. It’s fascinating to hear Henderson’s tenor sax blowing fiercely through echo and reverb as Coltrane shifts from piano to harp to tanpura to harmonium, achieving liftoff every time no matter the means.
