When classical pianist turned jazz virtuoso Vassilis Tsabropoulos debuted on ECM with bassist Arild Andersen and drummer John Marshall, listeners paid attention. And while Achirana was a perfectly respectable outing, in this follow-up, they found their groove. Either way, this is Andersen’s band through and through, and the bassist brings a feel for metamorphosis as only one of his caliber can. His interactions with Marshall are eminently soulful (e.g., in “Cinderella Song”). The pianist contributes striking originals to boot, blending influences with architectural integrity. All the while, the musicians really listen to each other, note by note.
