The second Algiers album benefited from a key addition, Bloc Party veteran Matt Tong, who joined the previously drum machine driven band for some initial touring. By the time of The Underside of Power they were a full fledged quartet, and the sprawling intensities throughout the album, driven by detailed sociopolitical critiques as much as vivid riffs on industrial and electronic rock interpretations, were matched by Franklin Fisher’s full-bodied soul shouts and uneasy croons.
