Themes for Grind

Released

Not, strictly speaking, Will Sergeant’s solo debut — that would have been his home-recorded and dubbed cassette Weird as Fish in 1978 — Themes for Grind appeared in 1982 after Echo & the Bunnymen had already built up a considerable following, which landed the album high up in the UK indie charts at the time. It’s a notable achievement for such an unusual but compelling collection of moody instrumentals, sounding less like Echo tracks and more like German art-rock-tinged semi-ambient and motorik compositions, a striking side pursuit.
