When Varieté appeared in 2010, Marc Almond said he was starting to run a bit slower, not to mention still dealing with the effects of his near fatal traffic accident, and intended the album to be a hail and farewell to standalone original work. This happily wasn’t the case, as The Velvet Trail and after showed, but if Varieté had been a final statement of sorts, it would have been a lovely way to go, emphasizing his more theatrical and cabaret side on such songs as “Nijinsky Heart” and the song that gave the title to his massive solo box set, “The Trials of Eyeliner.”
