Tense, poised, channeling atmosphere through skilled playing and sympathetic production and the gifts of a distinct singer and lyricist — the only reason why the Comsat Angels’s debut album isn’t as highly regarded as the near-contemporaneous Unknown Pleasures would appear to be strangely bad luck. The thrillingly stark power of “Independence Day” can’t be topped, but Waiting For A Miracle has any number of second place finishers, from the opening kick of “Missing In Action” to the slow burn of “Total War” to the nervous pulse of “”Baby.””
