Whip It On

Released

The Raveonettes’ debut release was quite grimy, even in comparison to their later noise-pop catalog. The difference is that the minor keys and clicking percussion sketch out an atmosphere similar to a pulp crime novel. “Attack of the Ghost Riders” and “Do You Believe Her” are some of the best overlooked songs of the rock and roll revival, featuring seductive duets by the band’s male and female singers Sune Rose Wagner and Sharin Foo, though their voices are frequently difficult to tell apart. The music sounds like a factory playing girl group songs in a thunderstorm, and Whip It On leaves an unsettling but enticing impression long after it’s over.
