Wings Over Water

Wings Over Water is the third of five JAPO outings—the most by any artist on ECM’s sister label—by Stephan Micus. This brocade features the colors of guitar, nay, sarangi, voice, flowerpots, Bavarian zither, and the Indonesian suling stitched by Sephardic and Southeast Asian influences. Micus’s use of flowerpots is magical; their melodic rhythms draw a map that starts and ends in the human heart. An unmistakable feeling of harvest prevails, singing of nourishment that comes from above and below to sustain those wandering in between.
