Tokyo’s “hyperpop” scene is so ridiculously broad that it practically transcends the label. There’s the well-rounded pop songwriting of 4s4ki, the genre chameleoning of PAS TASTA, the melodic trap-inspired stylings of LIL SOFT TENNIS, and then there’s whatever the hell kegøn is doing. The young producer’s second EP is packed to the brim with found sound—everything from the PlayStation 2’s startup sound effect, the Final Fantasy victory theme, Goku’s instant transmission from Dragon Ball Z, a flurry of gunshots—and it all happens at a blindingly fast clip. This release barely passes the 9 minute mark, but it feels like an entire sample library has fired off into your brain at once. A release that demands you to immediately run it back.
