Shun Nakaseko studied entomology in college. As someone with a genuine love for insects, killing them was something that he couldn’t bring himself to do, even if it was for his studies. Instead of researching the effects of insecticides for his graduation project, like most of his peers were doing, he opted to examine the calls of bugs instead. He recorded the sounds of over 50 creepy crawlers, augmenting them with sine waves and synthesizer. It feels like he’s listening closely to the cries of his buzzing buddies, responding thoughtfully to their chatter. These are songs of mercy, music willed into existence from a desire to let peaceful creatures live out the natural course of their short lives.
