Multimedia artist ZUN has birthed entire genres in every medium he’s touched. The creator of the Touhou series of video games, he’s been handling every aspect of them from their humble beginnings in 1995—art, programming, and music. Kanoguti is clearly a disciple of ZUN, doing creative work in all these same areas, but doing it weirder in every way. Their visual art is unsettling, and their games are high concept and difficult to play. Kanoguti’s music is no less strange, taking the complex time signatures and dramatic movements that define ZUN’s work and transforming those influences into something nearly unrecognizable with twisted samples and warped pitch bending. The best way to describe it: this might be what you get if you tried to describe ZUN’s music to someone that has never heard it before and tasked them to recreate it.
