YMO’s fourth album was the product of a slightly unsettled time for the trio, with Ryiuchi Sakamoto having differences with Haruni Hasono and only contributing one wholly new song, “Music Plans.” Even so, especially being the first full album since the groundbreaking Solid State Survivor, BGM was another commercial and critical success. Yukihiro Takahashi continued to shine as lead vocalist as well as drummer, with his “Ballet” and “Cue” being highlights, as the trio plus guests explored more of their sleek, electronic pop approach.
