Breakfast in America

Released

Supertramp, the mad geniuses, helped bring prog to the suburbs by masquerading as a pop band. And no record achieved the bait-and-switch like Breakfast In America, a bracing splash of FM Top 40 surrounded by jittery piano and the honkenest saxophones this side of Baker Street. From the silent movie barrelhouse openings of “Gone Hollywood” to the back-to-back surprise instant radio staples “The Logical Song” and “Goodbye Stranger,” to the surprisingly bitter pop-stomp “Take The Long Way Home,” it’s an album that reveals much more of its dark heart taken as a whole than sprinkled into your drive home from work. And it’s probably hanging out in your local record shop’s bargain bin for like $5 at most, so give it a spin.
