Like Ennio Morricone scoring a Ken Russell film, Fields of the Nephilim donned black cowboy hats and mounted their skeletal horses for a dusty nocturnal raid through an American West these Englishmen only knew from movies. Serious Blood Meridian vibes for sure. Also serious Sisters of Mercy vibes, but where Andrew Eldritch went for showtunes these guys went for Spaghetti (Spa-gothy?) Western. As far as album cuts go, “Slow Kill” and “Dust” succeed best at the vampiric hybrid; however, it’s the non-album singles (available on the reissues) “Power,” “Secrets,” and “Preacher Man” that would win any showdown at high midnight.
