Guitarist Caspar Brötzmann inherited his father Peter’s ability to overpower the listener with force and volume while retaining a surprising sensitivity. This third album by his power trio Massaker takes early ’90s postpunk and noise-rock into previously unimagined realms of sonic battery. Its four tracks range in length from eight and a half to twelve minutes, and each one places his guitar front and center, emitting waves of distortion that he sculpts with impassive and flawless control, turning a burst of noise and a rumble of low-end feedback into a riff, making it sound like a series of tuned explosions. Bassist Eduardo Delgado Lopez is a subtle supportive presence, unsurprisingly most audible on “Bass Totem,” while drummer Danny Arnold Lommen, formerly of Dutch instro-rockers Gore, provides crucial accents during the quiet bits and slams the hammer down when things get heavy.
