For Once in My Life

Excellent ’68 set from Stevie Wonder, his tenth album — and he was only 18 — is from that wonderful late 60s Motown sweet spot when he was increasing his writing and production credits, playing more instruments on his records and generally growing into the artist who would soon revolutionise soul music with his peerless 70s album run. There’s some superb fledging Motown funk with his Shoo-Be-Doo-Be-Doo-Da-Day and I’m More Than Satisfied and plenty of easy euphoria like the title track. No longer Little Stevie, his voice, writing, playing and production all rapidly maturing, this is a brilliant, classic Motown-sound Stevie Wonder album.
