California’s bubble gum soul family band The Sylvers’ Forever Yours was their most critically acclaimed album, and, not coincidentally, was entirely produced by Leon Sylvers III, just before he left the band to become one of the ‘80s’ most successful and influential soul/R’n’B producers. The band’s then-label Capitol rejected the album’s updated dancefloor-targeted sound but Casablanca Records bought into Forever Yours’ strong mix of big, bottom-heavy disco-funk, effortlessly buoyant soul and soft focus romantic balladry. Its high points, including the rich, opulent, multi-layered harmonies, sophisticated passing chords and sweeping glossy orchestration of mid-tempo soul swayers “Come On Down To My House,” “Love Changes” and “Diamonds Are Rare,” their glorious vocal showcase update of Smokey Robinson’s “Swept For You,” and the formidable rock-solid, synth-sprinkled disco grinder “Don’t Stop,” are overlooked high-end soul/R’n’B gems that are well worth a revisit.
