Vibraphonist David Samuels left a couple of indelible footprints in ECM’s exploratory discography from the 1980s. Gallery marries his skyward playing with the equally feathered talents of drummer Michael DiPasqua, reed virtuoso Paul McCandless, cellist David Darling, and bassist Ratzo Harris. This enigmatic outlier begs comparison to the work of Morton Feldman, whose intimate chamber sensibilities feel jazzily recalibrated in this setting. The album’s title is wholly appropriate, as each track feels like a different painting under the same roof.
